A cherished Welsh village nestled in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, celebrated for its community spirit and natural beauty.
The Vale of Glamorgan lies along the South Wales coast to the west of Cardiff, rich in pasture, history and beauty, and unique in its setting on the fringe of large industrial areas. Within the Vale are famous old castles and the ancient village of Llantwit Major, where tradition holds that one of the oldest Christian communities gathered in AD61.
Llanmaes has won the Vale of Glamorgan Best Kept Village Competition six times, and in 1997 was awarded the prestigious National Village of the Year title in the Community Life category β a testament to the pride and dedication of its residents.
The competition, established in 1953 in honour of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, rewards community effort above all else: the emphasis is on what villages do together, not simply their natural or architectural advantages.
"The entrance to the village was quite captivatingβ¦ Individual gardens and hedges were a joy to behold. One would be hard put to find such well-swept pavements and roads with a complete absence of litter. All in all, an outstanding village and a worthy winner." β Major Dan Clayton-Jones, Chief Judge, 1997
